Volunteering Stories

Here are some lovely stories below from young volunteers who have explained how volunteering has made an impact on their lives...

When I was 16 I was on a course called the Princes Trust. One of the requirements to complete the course is to do a two week work experience. I wanted to do waitressing or shop work so my team leader got back to me and said I could work one week in the Salvation Army charity shop, then one week in their café. I was thrilled to have two placements that I wanted to do. My first week was in the charity shop. On my first day I was quite nervous but the staff soon made me feel really welcome. As each day passed I was enjoying myself more and more and all too soon the first week of my placement was over so I had to make a decision: to work in the café or to work in the shop. I decided I would prefer to work in the shop because the atmosphere there was great. Working in the shop I learned a lot of new skills like how to use the till, managing stock, closing up a shop, customer service and lots of other useful tips to be successful when working in a shop. By the end of the two weeks I didn’t want to leave as everyone has been so supportive and friendly. I really enjoyed my work experience at the Salvation Army so much that I decided to continue volunteering there after my Princes Trust course had stopped. I have enjoyed my time there so much and I have now been volunteering for over a year and I love every day that I am in there.

In September 2014 I started an eight week work experience course through the job center at the Salvation Army Charity Shop in PERTH, after that eight weeks was up I decided to stay on as a volunteer. My time here has been amazing, the staff there are easy to get on with and work with. I have gained a lot of confidence and experience whilst having fun too. I would recommend joining as a volunteer here to anyone.
